Case Study: What Taiwan’s AI-Powered Cyberattack Means for the Rest of Us

Cyberattacks are usually described as a person—or a group of people—trying to break into a computer system. It used to be that simple, before artificial intelligence came along. Now the number, speed, and sophistication of attacks all improve as technology gets smarter.
AI is making it possible for attackers to automate a lot of the work involved in a cyberattack. That could eventually mean more attacks, all moving faster, against organizations and individuals around the world.
Case Study: What Happened in Taiwan?
In July 2026, Taiwan discovered an unusual cyberattack targeting government agencies. According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Digital Affairs, the attackers combined traditional hacking with AI agents that could perform parts of the attack automatically.
Taiwan disclosed the attack in August after detecting unusual activity against government agencies during July. According to reporting from Reuters, attackers used a combination of human direction and AI-powered tools to probe government systems. The AI could perform tasks that hackers traditionally complete manually, including searching for vulnerabilities and helping coordinate different stages of an attack.
Taiwan already deals with an extraordinary amount of malicious activity. The country reported an average of 2.63 million cyberattacks against its government network every day during 2025.
Adding AI to that environment creates a troubling new possibility: Attackers can do more without adding more people.
AI Can Give Attackers Scale
Imagine a scammer who can send 100 phishing emails manually every single day. Already pretty scary, right?
Now give that scammer AI that can research thousands of potential victims. Now, not only that, but a system that can customize messages for each person, translate them into different languages, and continue operating while the attacker starts focusing on their next malicious project.
The attacker has not suddenly become more talented, but they still become more efficient.
The same principle applies to more sophisticated cyberattacks. AI agents can help search for weaknesses, analyze information, adapt when something does not work, and perform repetitive tasks at speeds no human can match.
That means an attacker may eventually accomplish work that once required an entire team of threat actors.
You Don’t Have to Work for the Government to Care
It's easy to look at an attack against Taiwan and assume the lesson applies only to governments or critical infrastructure, but it’s not that simple. For starters, critical infrastructure includes the communication, transportation, and other digital systems we rely on every day. These disruptions can quickly affect entire populations without warning
Furthermore, the technology that makes attacks more efficient always eventually reaches the same criminals targeting businesses and individuals. Think about the attacks you already encounter: Phishing emails can become more personalized. Fake customer support conversations can run automatically. Attackers can research victims faster and test stolen passwords across services more efficiently.
Even a relatively inexperienced criminal can use AI to perform tasks that once required much more knowledge and time. If an attacker can target more people with less effort, smaller targets become more worthwhile. That only further imperils your data and devices.
Why Basics Matter More Than Ever
Just as threat actors work alongside AI, so must we. We can’t just expect technology to do all of the work. We also have to follow best practices to maintain good cyber hygiene.
Use unique passwords for each account and change them every 3 months.
Set up multi-factor authentication whenever possible.
Install software updates immediately instead of repeatedly postponing them.
Be suspicious of unexpected requests involving money, passwords, files, or account access.
Most importantly, stop relying on obvious mistakes to identify an attack! AI can write excellent English. It can personalize messages and respond naturally during conversations. Scams today don’t look like they used to.
Faster Attacks Require More Careful Users
The Taiwan incident represents something bigger than one attack against one government. Cybercriminals have always looked for ways to automate their work, and AI has given them an extremely powerful new way to do it.
Yet while AI has changed how hackers try to breach our data, it has also shaped how we fight back.
Sometimes, protecting your data means doing the simple things consistently: updating your devices, protecting your accounts, questioning unexpected requests, and taking an extra moment before you click.
AI may help attackers move faster, but we need to make sure it doesn't convince us to move too fast, too.
